This Workshop has been approved for Seven (7) New York State Professional Development Hours (PDHs)
Topic: Connecticut Valley Varved Clay
This workshop will review the Connecticut Valley regional geology, and discuss the physical characteristics, engineering properties, and construction considerations of Connecticut Valley Varved Clays (CVVC), with a focus on natural cementation. Over geologic time, stress develops in CVVC creating "cement intact" and "cement destroyed" states, which have different consolidation and shear strength behavior. Case histories involving the understanding of these two states and the lack of knowledge of behavior will be presented. The workshop will illustrate that CVVC is a complicated soil deposit and that quality sampling and testing, coupled with experienced engineering judgement, are justified expenses for routine projects.
Questions and discussion will be encouraged throughout the day.
